WHAT IS AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR/ COORDINATOR ?

I am a specialized movement choreographer, a movement dramaturg, an advocate for the performers, a liaison between the creative team and performers and an artist.

An Intimacy Director / Coordinator is specialized in staging the movement and psychology of human interactions that specifically involve intimacyIntimacy can manifest in our work; physically, emotionally or psychologically.

My approach as an intimacy director / coordinator is based in dramaturgical research and supporting authentic creative impulses that exist within our co-created container. I work with Best Practices (TIE and IDC) to ensure brave creative spaces and explorative collaborative working environments. I integrate into the process like any other designer or choreographer, and work to assure that the director(s)/teams vision is achieved. I provide nuances that help elevate and make your story of intimacy unique and special for your characters arch.  I do this while at the same time ensuring that all actions are repeatable both physically and psychologically for the performers so that the story continues to be clear for the duration of a run or during multiple takes.

I combine my knowledge and skills from my theatrical movement background with my work as an embodiment coach to replace sexualized language with somatic movement language, Laban language and embodied consent practices so that we can support a regulated nervous system that allows the performers to focus on their craft of acting and allows us to reach outside of the box of traditional images and find the shapes of intimacy that tell your story.

Taking it a step beyond choreography, I bring a set of specialized skills to my work including Mental Health First Aid, embodied listening tools and LGBTQ2+ allyship and awareness as I track and observe the bodies I work with

*In light of Covid-19 directors and performers have had to adapt and I am equipped and ready to help support you navigate these new spaces both virtually and in person as permitted.*

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

I work with you to build a process that works best for you! As a general rule here is what I do for productions :

  • Risk Assessment

  • Actor Intake Calls

  • Support a consent based Audition Process

  • Production Meetings

  • Meetings with Department heads

  • Collaborate with Wardrobe for Modesty Garments

  • Dramaturgy Research

  • Create open and closure practices

  • Ensure closed set / rehearsals

  • Choreograph intimate actions, adjust as consent changes

  • Consult on Nudity Riders

  • Provide Mental Health First Aid as needed

WHEN DO I NEED TO HIRE AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR / DIRECTOR

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF :

  • Does the project involve physical intimate actions?

  • Is there any touch happening between a minor and adult (ex parental relationship)?

  • Is there content that is  or has the potential to be emotionally triggering?

  • What power dynamics are in the room that may not support the ability to give consent? (ex. is the director also an actor, is an actor also a producer, is everyone friends?)

  • Are you feeling unsure?
